Fly Fishing
Winter does not mean the end to fly fishing in and around Jackson Hole. Winter
fly fishing is fast becoming a very popular winter sport. People that love to
fly fish are now finding it possible and pleasurable to fish through the winter
months. With the addition of warm new fly fishing clothing and gear, and
excellent winter fishing opportunities in rivers and streams throughout the
region, fly fishing can be at its best during winter!
Winter, for the most part requires nymph fishing, but under the right
conditions, dry flies also work. Very seldom are fishing trips cancelled
because of harsh weather. If you are a winter outdoor enthusiast, and have
never tried fly fishing in the winter, be prepared...you will be hooked!
Ice Fishing
If you enjoy ice fishing, you'll love fishing in our winter wonderland! Pick a
beautiful sunny day, head out to a frozen lake or reservoir, drill a hole and
drop in a line, with the hope of pulling out a large trout. Bring food and
drink, maybe even a portable grill, and make a day of it!
Fishing licenses and regulations, as well as bait and gear, are available at
local sporting goods stores and fishing shops. Please pay special attention to
winter ice fishing regulations pertaining to the lake where you plan to fish.
If you're unfamiliar with the current lake conditions, ask someone who is
knowledgeable about the current status.
Due to wind and fluctuations of temperatures, ice may be unstable. Watch for
and avoid lake overflow, wet areas and open water. We advise that you use
caution as you approach the ice. Motorized vehicles are not recommended for
most ponds and lakes. As with any outdoor recreation, go with a buddy when
planning to ice fish on frozen lakes, and let someone else know where you are
going and when you expect to return.
If you are thinking of a winter vacation, you might consider a combination
skiing, snowmobiling and a fishing experience.
