The Jackson Hole, Wyoming Town Downhill is held yearly at the Snow King Resort Ski Area in the town of Jackson, and is one of the most anticipated local winter events.
The race is one of only a handful of downhill-length ski races open to the public in the US. Each year, a few daring skiers take on the "Mini Hahnenkamm", so named for the course's resemblance to the famous downhill course in Kitzbeuhel, Austria.
The Town Downhill course is steep, fast, and scary. Everyday skiers, most with little official downhill experience, fly down the steep hill and navigate tight
turns at speeds exceeding 65 miles per hour. The challenge is simply to hold it all together from top to bottom on this unforgiving race course while letting go
of one's fear. 1994 Olympic gold medalist and Jackson Hole local Tommy Moe has participated in the event, and has been quoted as saying: "the King - it's steep, it's gnarly."
The race winner takes home a $1000 cash prize, and perhaps more importantly, satisfaction and local notoriety as King at "the King". Prizes, a party,
and an auction are all part of the event, which is sponsored by the Jackson Hole Ski Club.
