Winter Nightlife in Jackson Hole, Wyoming
By Dawn McKibben

For many who live in or visit Jackson Hole in the winter there is one unfortunate fact of life: It's impossible to ski 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Eventually the face goes numb from the cold, the legs cry out for relief and, hey, the slopes have to be groomed some time.

Here are a few suggestions on what to do in Jackson to pass those hours between taking the boots off and putting them on again. The Hole has a variety of entertainment to suit just about every inclination whether it is live music, theater or hockey.  The town even has a bowling alley at the Elk's club.

When it comes to post-slope entertainment, the Mangy Moose at Teton Village deserves special mention. It is recognized as Jackson's premier apres ski establishment and was ranked as one of the best apres ski bars in the country in a 1995 Snow Country Magazine poll.

The Moose features an eclectic variety of live acts, from hip-hop to acoustic guitar, in an even more eclectic setting. Look for the airplane suspended from the rafters in the restaurant, a highly recommended way to start any high-flying evening off right.

The Cowboy Bar and the Rancher Bar, both on the Jackson Town Square, are places to try for a night on the town. The Cowboy offers live Country and Western music and dancing in a rustic setting. Dance lessons are offered on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

One must-see musical event is the weekly Hootenanny, held every Monday night at Dornan's in Moose. This folk/acoustic jam session features some of the valley's best amateur musicians as well as anyone else who wants to take the stage.

Jackson also has a number of coffee houses if your looking to bring liquid warmth to the body and soul.

When it comes to food, the Hole is not deficient in great eateries no matter what the budget. There are so many fine restaurants that it would be impossible to list them all. Suffice to say that it is very hard to get a bad meal in the valley.

There is more to Jackson than just food and drink. Jackson Hole offers a number of indoor apres ski recreation activities such as movies, live music, amateur hockey, swimming and bowling. Jackson has four movie theaters: Movie Works, south of town on U.S. 89, Jackson Hole Twin Cinema on Pearl Street and Teton Theater one block north of the Town Square. Grand Teton Mainstage shows a variety of second run and other films. Mainstage also has live theater and dance, and will host a number of performances throughout the winter.

Snow King Arena also has public skating at various times throughout the day. The fee is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Skate rental is $2.

Had a little too much cold? Try the Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center's pools. The Rec Center features a lap pool, a 185' water slide and a hot tub among other aquatic attractions. Non-resident, one-time entry fees are $3 for children, $4.25 for youths (13-17) and $5.50 for adults. Family rates are available. The pools stay open until 8 p.m. for open swim (7 p.m. for slide) on week nights, 9 p.m. for open swim (8 p.m. for slide) on Friday and Saturday and 7 p.m. for open swim (6 p.m. for slide) on Sunday.

All of these activities, on top of skiing, can leave a person in need of a little more rest and relaxation. Why not try a massage? Jackson has a number of licensed practitioners. All and all, there is more to do in Jackson off the slopes than one could ever hope to have time for.
